One can easily dodge customs taxes and such from CDJapan as long as they pick a slower shipment method and don't order too many items at once. Marking the order as a gift can also work sometimes. Registered Mail has been an ideal choice for me so far. On the site it says that it's slower than EMS, but sometimes I've gotten my packages faster through Registered Mail than through EMS. The packages are also insured as they are with EMS. I live in Canada, so I'm always uptight about getting hit with customs fees. When I tried using CDJapan's EMS a couple of times, the post office here put customs fees on those orders both times. This stopped happening after I switched to Registered Mail.
Really? I'm in Canada too and I've used EMS from CDJapan a couple of times and I've never gotten customs fees. They're generally always pretty small orders of 2-3 items each time and the total amount is always clearly printed on the outside of the package so I don't know what the difference might be. The only time I ever get duty fees from CDJ is when I use FedEx, and with them it only seems to happen because they're a private courier and properly declare everything to the government to avoid getting into trouble.
I've also never gotten any fees from YesAsia but I haven't ordered from them in a long while. But I do get customs fees from HMV JP, and they also ship via EMS, so I think it's because of the invoice they provide.
anyone know if Play-Asia is good? I live in Canada and I want to make a
purchase from them. The only two places I buy from is eBay and YesAsia
but I want to branch out now.
They're alright. Their shipping time is about the same as YesAsia and it's nice that they let you choose how you want it sent.
I'm pretty sure Play-Asia uses the same suppliers as YesAsia, though, since they're both in Hong Kong so if you're looking for an item that YA doesn't have and PA says it's available, I wouldn't count on it. Play-Asia only seems to check on availability when someone places an actual order for something. Though, you could also be pleasantly surprised sometimes as I managed to get Yu Yamada's "MYUSIC" album from PA when YA said it was unavailable.
