So I read that this album's theme is supposed to be about her mother and motherhood? Fantôme is an interesting word for the theme! It means ghost in French.

(Where did my post go omg)

The cover is a little disappointing, but mostly due to the text; the font choice and color really detracts from the beautiful artistic shot they took, especially with a name like Fantome. All of the shots are gorgeous, as are the titles. Hoping to get something a little 'upbeat' (reading through the song titles alone, Show Me Love kept playing in my head...so something along those lines where it's still gorgeous and ballady but more raw and angsty?) but with songs like the three singles released it's harder to say

I actually love the juxtaposition of grey and orange, it's one of my favorites, although I can see the cover without the text at all being amazing as well. I feel like we won't be getting a proper banger on this album, maybe something along the lines of Hanataba wo Kimi ni at best which isn't that much of a ballad.

We can't assume the album will be filled with ballads and mid-tempos. Even Ultra Blue era started with dareka and be my last. She did mention on her Twitter Q&A that Cocteau Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas is her current favorite album, so something like kairo or passion is still possible.

Now with the cover revealed and track-list is out. Can we assume she's not doing KH3 and EVA (sans nagashi) with this album?

KH3 doesn't even have a release date, She can't make a place for a song on her album that releases
this year for a video game that won't be coming out this year.

The wait is almost over!! I like the grey with the orange text. I just don't like blurry pics. I get why it's blurry though.
I love her hair. Overall I'm good. I can't wait to be able to preorder this.

Oh, it's just because people on twitter assume that they are going to announce it during Tokyo Game Show this September the same way they first announced her involvement with hikari back in 2002. I guess now it's just coincidental with the release date of the album.   smiley: tired

Short album review translated by U.Blog:

"Though not all tracks, I listened to Utada Hikaru’s 'Fantôme'"

The first thing I was super happy about, was that even after so many days and months, and even with so many changes in her life and surroundings, Utada Hikaru’s music hasn’t changed.
As always, the music is sincere and yet ferocious, shrewd yet optimistic, and for the moments while listening to her music, through the magical powers of pop music, all listeners are transformed into beasts of love.

Of course, you get a sense of many different changes and evolutions, but it made me feel that her break from music was really utilized to foster her immense talents as a songwriter and musician, as well as her ability to continue just living her life.

Once I’m able to listen to all of the tracks together, I’m hoping to write a more thorough review.

I've honestly only heard it used once aside from here (on f(x)'s Red Light album). Was curious, just Googled it, and it's apparently French. Whodathunk

Also, I forgot how beautiful Sakura Nagashi was until I played it earlier today while driving through the storm we're having down here. Truly stunning. I really can't wait to hear this album ;;

↑ also it's in an AKB48 song, and i have seen the word in some other songs too but it wasn't in the dictionary. i think there are some other words that appear to be English words but i only see in Japanese song...squall was one of theme until i looked it up and it actually is an English word, it just seems to come up in Japanese more than in English lol. but i'm sure there are some other Japanese-exclusive words that must come from other languages that i see in song titles.

Lolol Squall. I've been playing a lot of Kingdom Hearts lately so that was the first thing I thought of, but yeah it's not a very commonly-used English word thinking about it. I guess they just adapt strange things (similarly, in Korea they like to use skinship to define an intimate relationship, which makes sense but is also like hwat)

Yup it's French smiley: wink! That being said we never use it in its singular form when talking about vacations, we always use "vacances", which is pronounced the exact same way. In its singular form it would rather mean "vacancy" so it's a completely different meaning... So バカンス or 바캉스 should actually be romanized "vacances" to be semantically correct in these song titles.

Sorry to be off topic haha. I'm really excited for Fantôme so I'm silently stalking this thread

So I've been binge listening to all of Utada's music lately, and Exodus is such a frustrating album. It's one of my least favorite albums from Utada, but I feel like it has the potential to be so much better. My biggest problem with the album is her vocals. They're honestly awful on a good portion of it.

Ahaha, it's probably my favorite of hers.

I have a love/hate relationship with the album. It actually stands the test of time well, and the music sounds just as fresh today as it did then. I just wish it was a bit more polished. I think it's some of her greatest work as far as producing goes, but not so much as a cohesive package. I appreciate Exodus because it was the precursor in a sense to Ultra Blue, which is my favorite album by her.

Exile is releasing their new best album in the same day as Fantôme. Such a b***h move from avex.

Even if she gets the #2 weekly, I think she'll get the #1 best selling female album this year.

wow i feel like EXILE release a best album every year or something these days... i lost all interest in them after they became a mega group, they were so much better when they were a group of 7... that best album is definitely just avex's counter to Utada's album, there's barely any new material since their last album release, like 4 new songs, and they're all singles that have (or will have) released by the album release date.

I think Utada's album might get some kind of digital achievement though as well, like #1 most downloaded album of the year or something. She seems to perform better there, like with Flavor Of Life, her two recent songs, and with her Singles Best Collections.

I wonder if they'll release at least one more song on her album as promo before the album release date. I feel they revealed the whole album tracklist and cover too early to not give us something else before the album drops.
