MVs: FEEL's videos are more re-watchable to me, but _genic's videos are far more remarkable. Going independent has already led to levels of creativity she wasn't allowed to have under Rising Pro: the world's (probably) first touch-based MV, the world's first extension-enhanced MV, and her first one-shot MV. All done in less than six months of leaving. lol The other two videos (Fashionista and Stranger) are her standard fare, but the other three more than make up for it.
The album as a whole: After listening for a couple weeks now, I can say that this album is up there with her best for me. (Honestly though, everything post-STYLE aside from Uncontrolled is 'up there with her best for me' haha.) Like most, it reminds me of P<F with the mix of styles/genres and focus on 'old school meets new school'. Her vision of 'revival', while not entirely unique, feels special since it resonates closely with her career and longevity, and the songs she put on this album show this off very well. The other theme, celebration of independence and confidence, is also executed well with the lyrics, and makes the album feel like a true new beginning. I really like the juxtaposition of focusing on 'throwback' sounds while lyrically singing about being (newly) independent and very confident in oneself.
The songs: I'll compare them only to FEEL since it was her previous album. For FEEL, there were some songs I immediately knew were only 'okay', and that was the string of songs Poison - La La La - Supernatural Love - LMLYG. They were good, but compared to the rest of the album they took a backseat (especially La La La). With _genic, I feel as though the songs all stand out in their own way, with none of them overshadowing the others. Like each song really could be a single. The exception is Scream, which is the only song that breaks the transitional flow of the album for me and makes me go "Why?" haha. I guess it's this album's "La La La" for me. My favorite string of songs is Fashionista - Fly - BWIW2B - Stranger. <3 I think this is a rare case of me liking the back half of an album more than the front half. I'm surprised with how much I love Fashionista, since it was the promo track I was least excited by... yet now it's one of my favorites.
Her process: Honestly, anyone can say anything they want about her and it doesn't matter to me. Haters gonna hate, people gonna have their own biased opinions. For me, I love that she embraces how she doesn't believe herself to be a good songwriter but a great performer. She's also a great 'album curator', if you wanna call it that. People can deny her influence in her work all they want, but she's been more open than ever I think in just how hands-on she is with the process. She picks the album themes herself, her team does the manual work of finding demos from all sorts of places, she herself goes through the selection and picks exactly what she wants, and then she demands changes to the songs during recording so that they better fit the feeling she wants from them. If you call that being a puppet or still say her albums are not 'hers', then more power to you for being a hater. lol
