considering how japanese music has been these past few years, i'd expect you know how to find your ways through it, yes?

You're missing the point. I know where to find the music I like no problem, and that's not the issue.

It is important that they also get popular. You need diversion and variation to keep a market going and inspire more originality! Everyone wins out in the end.

That's only an ideal.  Not what actually happens.
Kpop is gaining recognition but they've been recycling the same things for a long time now.

Yes, K-pop recycles a lot. But at least they're using  a sound that is popular now, while Japan is stuck with the same idol sound since the 90s.

And I disagree about "if Japanese like bad idol music, there's no problem with it" like it's the only kind of music that Japanese people like. Everybody knows this kind of music sells because they have crazy and wild marketing strategies (pretty much like Justin Bieber and 1D in the west).

The problem is that Japanese executives are lazy and doesn't want to try new things since idols are highly profitable.

That's what happen if music industry doesn't really sell originality, uniqueness and the most important of all, music! Itself,anymore.
And by I mean w/ music industry r those executives who only care how to produce cash..
Don't worry though since there are still some who oppose it, and yearly album chart still proves it.
There are actually new generation band that still manage to get decent like, bump of chicken, ikimono & radwimps for example, but actually there r more. I'd like to name a few but it'd probably just bias.
It isn't really abt 90's sound is out of date. Any sound can be made good to me. More about writing & composition for me..
I remember a friend of me, he was a classic guitar player, guessing the chord I showed to him, he said "this must be from japan." the song was DAI's 1st 1st single, tangerine dream.

There's no such thing as outdated sound IMO. Dubstep and autotune and the sound that Kpop is using however, are embarrassingly overrated and it will do nothing to their industry in the long term.

It's not an ideal since it did actually happen back in the 90's.

Looks like THSK gets quite a big adjustment.

@raito, oh, quick to jump to conclusions are we? I don't know whether i should take you seriously after the comment on JB, 1D, and etc. They have tons of fans that like their songs. Honestly, denying someone's success is just low. They're popular, you don't like them and that doesn't mean others don't like them. Also, there is no outdated music. Any of it can sound good but it seems you have your bias in the way preventing you from writing more objectively. Anyways, nobody implied that idol music is the only music that japan likes, that's an extreme generalization that we should be staying away from.

@Whitedove
The 90s has a completely different popular culture than what it is now. Sure, it could happen. but it's not going to be as easy as it was in the 90s. It would be cool if more people decided to buy more music but the situation looks even more grimmer as time passes. I really don't think we'll see any big changes in the pattern of the music industry until other issues are fixed.
though i think the japanese music industry never really blossomed until the late 80s. Most of Japan's most popular / successful artists all come from the late 80s-90s period from what i see.

@IceHism,

I guess we just have to agree to disagree in this matter then. Though let me tell you, I've known of Japanese music since 1992 (and Japanese dramas since late 80's but that's another story), and it's not as easy as you kids made it out to be.

Back on topic, album sales picks up a bit last week, and hopefully better this week.
